#Polypharmacy means a patient being put on five or more medications at the same time. This is commonly prevalent in #elderly since this age group of people suffer from more then one #disease simultaneously. Elderly people also get referred to different medical specialities due to the age related detoriation of the anatomical, physiological and biochemical functions of their bodies. As a result of which, they end up with different #prescriptions and many more medicines to be consumed concurrently. Medicines can have an #adverse effect when taken at the same time/ in combination, without properly considering the side effects. More then 80% of community dwelling elderly are dependent on multiple drugs for daily functioning. #Polypharmacy, which has a deleterious effect on health, can be prevented to an extent by formulating a necessary and safe combination of all the essential drugs and supplements for the patient. Many additional medicines are continued on; which may not be required so such kind of medications can be eliminated. A proficient follow-up with the #Geriatrician and timely physical evaluation is essential to keep on course. Polypharmacy sounds and seems difficult but can be managed with patience, proper information, knowledge, efficient follow ups and of course the kind, gentle and sympathetic approach of a #Geriatrician.
