It is defined as a #violation of a vulnerable older person's human and #civilrights by another person. Different types of abuse recognized are verbal/psychological, physical, financial, sexual, self neglect and discriminatory.

The #prevalence is difficult to measure because older people are unable, frightened or embarrassed to report its presence. A #Modified Conflict Tactics Scale is available for enquiring about abuse from the patient and the care givers in a gentle and diplomatic way. Also while examining physical evidence is seen and on proper counseling other forms of abuse can be detected.

Geriatrician/treating physicians need to be vigilant while interacting and examining an elder person. #Legal action is taken in the form of penalty or imprisonment. #Counseling of the care givers and lending a patient ear to their woes also helps because elder care giving is an extremely demanding, exhausting and frustrating job.
